Julius Caesar. Packed full of symbolism, mysticism, greed, loyalty and all that jazz—it’s no wonder the play is a staple in any high school English classroom, let alone the stage. And again, no surprise then that Langara College’s Studio 58 decided to present the Shakespearean tragedy as part of its 2012 season. That is, with a twist.

This is my third or fourth time at the Stanley. Besides the Orpheum or Vogue, this theatre has to be one of the nicest in the city. It has charm.

For the past few weeks I’ve read rave reviews (in 140 characters or less) of La Cage aux Folles—a Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company production. So with glowing accolades in my mind and yes, a dose of expectation, I set out to see the musical this past Tuesday.
When you think patron saint, let’s face it…Stanley Park might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But put them together, and what you get is the second run of a holiday fable care of the Arts Club.
Written by playwright Hiro Kanagawa, The Patron Saint of Stanley Park attempts to dish sci-fi for the Christmas season. Not your traditional tale of gift-giving and egg nog drinking. Sure. But as much as it wishes to depart from the good ol’ clichés of hope and love and all that jazz…it delivers it in spades.

With the holiday season comes an inundation of holiday film classics. You know the usual suspects: It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, and of course, White Christmas. Well, perhaps of course is a bit of a stretch. I haven’t seen it.
The holiday season is jam-packed full of Christmas fables and spirited plays…and The Sound of Music. Not your typical fa la la la la production, but a classic nonetheless.
A new opera season's second production was the famous classic tragedy of Romeo and Juliette. Original play by Shakespeare, this opera version is by a 19th century French composer Charles Grounod, best known for his Ave Maria and opera Faust.
Grounod's Romeo and Juliette has a special place in the hearts of music lovers.
